An oil refinery in Rotterdam’s harbor needed a 70m3/h water treatment plant for a period of three years, to reduce airborne benzene emissions from the existing biological wastewater treatment plant.
The chosen solution, pre-treatment of the benzene-rich wastewater flow, prior to its entry into the site’s existing biological treatment process.
In the biological treatment plant, the remainder of soluble benzene is degraded and removed. The Logisticon temporary plant will be used to test whether pre-treatment of the wastewater leads to a reduction of the airborne benzene emissions and whether further biological processing is possible.
In process technical terms, the supplied influent is fed directly to a Dissolved Air Flotation (DAF) unit by gravity. After dosage of coagulant and a polymer, the DAF-unit separates the oil and solids with help of dissolved air from the wastewater, so that sludge is created. To form the required microbubbles, compressed air is used to float the oil and solids. The buoyant sludge layer is removed, collected, and disposed.
For this trial, the DAF-unit is completely covered and equipped with air extraction and treatment with carbon filters to absorb the volatile hydrocarbons that might be released (stripped) during treatment.
Together with the oil refinery, Logisticon came up with the process design, built and installed the plant, after which it was successfully commissioned.
Logisticon had previously provided a satisfactory water treatment solution for this customer. Therefore, the customer wanted to continue the existing good working relationships which it had already developed with Logisticon.
